The Ten Commandments Of Internet Marketing

Once you've taken the time to review the Ten Commandments of Internet Marketing suggested below, you may be reminded of the wisdom of King Solomon, who wrote in the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes that "there is no new thing under the sun". Is Internet marketing any different than all the sales pitches and gambits ever devised throughout history? Perhaps not.

Truly, Fast talkers, shysters and barkers, not to mention gullible prospects with tingling ears, have always been in our midst. Oh, the technology has changed, but the essential mission has remained the same-to reach as many potential customers as possible. Remember the famed traveling salesman? Let's not forget the technological advances in marketing brought about by storefronts, newspapers, magazines, the telephone, radio and television.

The Internet is merely the latest means of marketing goods and services. Yet, the Internet marketplace, with its enormous capacity to reach so many people under the guise of anonymity, is somewhat unique. Therefore, it seemed good to offer a table of commandments, not so much for the purveyors of Internet commerce, but for those of us who continue to search for a golden goose.

I. Thou shalt not cause prospective customers to take the name of the Lord of the Internet in vain, due to the viewing of long and repetitive sales videos that go on and on and on. GET to the point, sayeth the Lord of the Internet!

II. Thou shalt not swear that a product is worth far more than the asking price. If thou couldest sell it for more, thou wouldest.

III. Thou shalt not offer irrefutable evidence of previous earnings by logging into a personal account.

IV. Thou shalt not defile the innocence of naive web-surfers who still believe that 100 percent free means 100 percent free.

V. Thou shalt not cast a slippery line, nor bait thy hook with pretension. Are there really only so many slots available, and wilt thou truly turn customers away after so many days?

VI. Thou shalt get thy story straight! Just how many times and how many products have raised thee from the depths of poverty and into the lap of luxury?

VII. Thou shalt treat thy employees with equity and justice. Wouldest it not be altogether righteous to do for the employee who answers thy telephone, what thou hast promised to do for thy customers?

VIII. Thou shalt not declare that all other marketing products are a scam, but that thine alone hast solved the mystery of online success.

IX. Thou shalt never again utter the words: "push a few buttons", "works on autopilot", or "sit back and relax while gobs of money flow into your bank account".

X. Thou shalt unveil the beginning from the end. Vital upgrades revealed after the sale are an abomination unto the Lord of the Internet.

Well, there you are-The Ten Commandments of Internet Marketing, far from comprehensive, but suitable for provoking a measure of contemplation and a chuckle or two. Though there are people who are naturally skeptical about most things in life, most of us want to believe the grandiose claims made by self-proclaimed Internet marketing gurus. Many of us eventually learn our lessons the hard way, while yet others never accept the old adage, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is".

If you spend any amount of time perusing the various social websites, you might be astonished by the very large percentage of people who refer to themselves as Internet marketers. It makes good sense that one would find a large number of Internet marketers on the Internet, but let's face it, Internet marketing is perceived as the new frontier of economic opportunity. It's only natural that so many people are pursuing the riches offered by the Internet.

Everyone wants to stake a claim on the Internet. Remember the California Gold Rush? You don't have to dig a hole in the ground with a pick, but mining for Internet gold is no easier than it was for the miners who toiled to unearth golden nuggets in nineteenth century California. Just like our gold digging predecessors, most of us end up with only fools gold to show for our effort and financial investment.

It just makes good sense to take every shiny new Internet opportunity with a grain of salt. That's the real purpose of suggesting a table of Internet marketing commandments. If even one aspiring Internet marketer gives pause before clicking the check-out button, this humble project will have been well worthwhile. One can only hope that an increasing number of digital merchandisers will also adopt the principles conveyed by The Ten Commandments of Internet Marketing, but this is only likely to occur if a growing number of consumers become wary of the extravagant claims they come across while searching for economic freedom. There have always been, and will always be, ingenious entrepreneurs who seem to know just how to entice their neighbors with promises of wealth and prosperity. This is no less true of our digital neighbors.
