Costa Rica For Less

Getting to Costa Rica is the most expensive part of visiting the country but once you get there bargains can be had for the savvy traveler. Big deals are made about living and retiring to Costa Rica and living the good life in a tropical country that stays warm year round.

The best thing to do when you arrive to rent a car. That way you have the freedom to explore the country on your own without having to mess with expensive tours that have a time schedule. Renting a car gives you the independence to set your own schedule and see your own stuff. Just be careful driving and have your cell phone handy in case of emergencies. Most places have paved roads and you can reach rather easily but more remote areas require a four wheel drive vehicle, so consider where you want to drive to as far as what vehicle to rent.

Seeing Costa Rica's national parks is a trip unto itself. Arenal National Park has Costa Rica's active volcano set amidst lush tropical jungle. Over 180 parks are set aside as Costa Rica has realized the value of people coming to see one of the most lush tropical landscapes in the world.

National parks are very inexpensive to see compared to taking a tour. Entrance fees range from ten to twenty dollars and most of that fee goes directly towards park operations. With so many tourists flocking to see the parks, some have become the victim to environmental decay, but there are plenty of parks to see that are world-class and worth every penny. Again, seeing these parks away from a tour is the best way to go to the most for your money.

The Central Bank of Costa Rica oversees the impressive Pre-Columbian Gold Museum in downtown San Jose. Over 1, 500 pieces of gold from Costa Rica's pre-Columbian civilizations from 500 to 1500 C.E. (Common Era). For a smal fee you can see some of the best artifacts of the civilizations that developed on this side of the Atlantic before the Spanish conquest. You will probably need to learn Spanish to fully interpret the displays, but if you take a tour the experts at the museum are bilingual. On special gold tour nights, you can pay a premium to have dinner in the museum and get a souvenir gold piece after your exclusive tour by museum scholars.

No matter what you see in Costa Rica, prepare to be impressed by relatively low cost and ease of travel throughout the country.
