How To Cancel Your Cable And Watch TV Online

With the rising costs of cable and the wealth of television and movie content on the internet, many people are wondering if it's time to dump their cable subscription for something more affordable and customizable.

If you're ready to cancel your cable subscription there are some good alternatives out there, especially online, but there also a few things you'll need to get the most out of your cable-free lifestyle.

Local programming If you have an antenna, it's likely you'll be able to get local HD programming without a problem, depending on where you live. It may be old school, but antennas are still available and if they allow you to get free HD programming, they're worth a try.

Set Top Boxes More and more set top boxes are being released these days. The Apple TV, Roku Box, and Boxee Box are all examples of set top boxes that allow you to stream TV shows and movies from the internet, directly onto your TV. A good comparison of the three can be found here, and there are sure to be more and more on the market in the future.

Netflix Netflix started as a DVD rent-by-mail service, but has added a much more popular instant streaming service as well that can be viewed on your computer, video game console, set top boxes, and more. The company just recently announced discount pricing on their instant streaming only plan for $7.99 a month. Add $1 for the mail service as well. Netflix has an unbelievable amount of inventory--movies, TV shows, documentary, concerts. You could spend years watching everything they have to offer. Right now, they only supply movies and TV shows that are already on DVD, so they won't be any help if you need to see last week's episode of "The Office." But Netflix is actively working with networks and studios to get content faster, and they already supply "Saturday Night Live" episodes the day after they air.

Hulu Hulu, on the other hand, will allow you to watch the latest episodes of many of your favorite shows, with "limited commercial interruption, " for free. Most networks post their shows one or two days after they air. Hulu recently came out with a subscription service, Hulu Plus, for $7.99 a month that gives users access to more episodes and fewer commercials. But if you're not too concerned about watching past episodes, the free version of Hulu will likely be all you need to keep up to date. Hulu is also available on Playstation 3.

Even with subscriptions to both Netflix and Hulu plus the cost of a set top box, you'd likely save money compared to the average cable bill for a year and they would give you access to hundreds of films and TV shows that cable wouldn't be able to provide.

However, if you're set on watching your cable TV shows the moment they're on, or if you've gotten used to the DVR that came with your cable subscription, it may be difficult to cut it out.

But if you find that you don't watch many cable shows and you don't mind watching programs after they've aired, you'll likely save money in the long run by cancelling cable.
