Hollywood Musicals Available For Netflix Instant Viewing That Make The Roku Worth The Price

The Roku device that allows you to watch the movies available for Netflix instant viewing on your TV set is a must-have for lovers of musicals. the musical genre has been dead for some two or three decades now, although High School Musical appears poised to make it cool again. While Turner Classic Movies regularly airs musicals, that is the only network that does. and many video stores don't carry but the biggest names when it comes to classic musicals. Between TCM and your local video store, your sudden an inexplicable obsession with seeing a musical cannot but help remain unstrummed. Enter the Roku device from Netflix. These are a just a few of the musicals that Netflix has made available for instant viewing and streaming to your TV via the Roku.

Singin' in the Rain The king of classic Hollywood musicals, there isn't much that I can say about this Gene Kelly masterpiece that hasn't already been said. I do have one interesting bit of trivia that points to the utter absurdity of how Hollywood works. You know that scene where Debbie Reynolds character is supposed to dubbing for Jean Hagen's character prior to the "Would You" song? Turns out that the voice you actually hear is Jean Hagen. In other words, Jean Hagen is dubbing for Debbie Reynolds who is supposed to be dubbing Jean Hagen. The Roku device will let you watch this scene over and over again to luxuriate in this madness.

Little Shop of Horrors Another bit of madness. A movie musical based on a Broadway musical based on a B-movie! Frankly, I'm not terribly impressed with Little Shop of Horrors, but it is worth considering the purchase of Roku from Netflix for the dentist number with Steve Martin.

Oliver! This movie gets a bad rap because it beat out 2001: A Space Odyssey for Best Picture, but it's actually a very good movie. It is definitely the second best musical of that bad lot to win Best Picture during the 1960s: not as good as West Side Story, but infinitely superior to The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady. The songs are catchy, the story is from Dickens no less, and this is one classic Hollywood musical that most kids will be able to sit through.

Jailhouse Rock Not a classic musical, of course, but this is probably Elvis Presley's best movie; this or Viva Las Vegas. A great ride and it's fun to watch Elvis trying to become the next James Dean. A bit of trivia: the girl who plays the love interest tragically died in a car accident not long after filming on Jailhouse Rock ended. Another, perhaps even sadder bit of trivia: there is a movie titled Jailhouse Rock listed as being in development at IMDB. One can only hope it is a merely a coincidence and not plans for a remake.

American Pop Ralph Bakshi tells the story of the evolution of American music through his unique style of animation. Oddly, the story climaxes with a song from the distinctly un-American Sex Pistols and culminates with the rather bizarre idea that Bob Seger's "Night Moves" was the ultimate accomplishment of American popular music.

The King and I Not my cup of tea, but if you are a lover of classic Hollywood musicals, then this portrait of a proper British lady dancing with a bald Siamese king may be worth the price of a Netflix Roku.

An American In Paris Ditto. Except that in this case it's not a bald Yul Brynner but Gene Kelly. Overrated, to be sure. But it still seems to please some people and you may be one of those. The Roku is certainly not to be bought specifically for instant viewing of An American in Paris, but as long as its possible you might want to give it a shot.

Tommy Frankly, you'd be better served by just buying the original Tommy album by The Who rather than having your illusions destroyed by the sight of an extraordinary uncool Elton John as the pinball wizard. But hey, whatever floats your boat. Tommy is over the top and that alone may be worth the effort to see it for the first time on your TV using Netflix and the Roku.

Purple Rain I think Purple Rain was the movie that convinced me Roger Ebert had lost his mind. Not only did he give Purple Rain a glowing review, but this mess even made his top ten list. I can remember renting Purple Rain and staring wide-eyed with my jaws agape that this movie had gotten such rave reviews. It's dreadful, perfectly dreadful. But you may like it.

Shall We Dance Well, we certainly can't have a list of the Hollywood musicals you can watch on the Netflix Roku without including a classic Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers musical?
