Alternatives To Wedding Cake

Quotes For BridesLet them eat cupcake! No doubt you already know that weddings are expensive. I was working with a budget of $5, 000 total for mine, and expected around 100 guests. Pulling off a $5000 wedding and reception in this day and age is a challenge. Everywhere you turn there's another expense to take into consideration, and everything wedding related always has an inflated price tag. So, if you have a tight budget to work with and need to cut back wherever you can, figuring out where you can cut corners is going to be very important to you!

Trendy and Unconventional

One thing I decided I could cut the cost on was my cake. I happened to be talking to a guy at work who was also getting married. He said he and his fiancee' had been going to bakeries and had gotten quotes for cakes for $1, 000! Yikes! Yes, this helped me decide that cupcakes were the way I was going to go! When I told people I wanted to have cupcakes for my wedding they were a little surprised. This IS a rather unconventional but trendy alternative to wedding cake. If you're thinking of doing cupcakes but are worried they will be too informal or not special enough for your reception, I suggest you do an image search online for "wedding cupcakes". You will find a ton of pictures out there of some very cool ways to switch up the wedding norm with something different and unexpected. It's amazing what the options are with cupcakes. And you can create a tier to place them on and still have the "look" of a wedding cake. Try this link for the search results of "wedding cupcakes" from Flickr.

So, where should you get them from? Now, you could go to a professional bakery and have them make them for you, which might cost as much as a cake, I'm not sure since I didn't check into that. You could make them yourself if you're a good baker, and you have the ambition and time (or helpers) to make as many as you need. or....if you have a Sam's, Costco or other warehouse store nearby, you might be able to get a very good deal on cupcakes, like I did. At my local Sam's Club they charge about $12 for a box of 30 cupcakes. So it cost me $63 for 150 cupcakes! It's also important to note - I saved $50 on the caterer's bill because I did not need any cake cutting done at the reception hall. I had the cupcakes on the table as part of my centerpiece/table decorations, too so they served a dual purpose.

I recommend doing a trial run before your big day, especially if you're having a warehouse store create them for you and you didn't choose an exact sample to work from. Order a box of them so you can see what they'll look like. Don't forget to take pictures of the cupcakes, that way when you place your official order for the wedding you can give them the picture so they make them exactly the same way. PS: You don't have to eat them all - your co-workers will appreciate the treat I'm sure! Mine did! :)

Adding a Little Extra....

Because Sam's Club did not have any options to bake them in a special, more fancy wrapper, I had to figure out a way to dress them up myself. My friend came up with the idea to make our own from gold foil and white paper doilies. We got together one evening and figured out the pattern, then the night before the wedding my friends and I sat and taped the wrappers around each cupcake.

I still wanted to have a "cake table". So I got creative and made a tiered stand using mirrors. (I have instructions on how to make one on my webpage if you're interested. I also have photos of the wrappers as well.) As for the top cake that we would cut, I found a Wilton cake pan that makes giant cupcakes. The pan bakes 2 cakes - one is shaped like the bottom of a cupcake, the other is shaped like a swirled frosting. You put the two together and then you have one giant cupcake. After several shots of trial and error, we realized it looked more like a normal cupcake if you left the top cake off and just frosted it. We managed to get it to closely resemble my cupcakes. In the end it all came together perfectly!

I did a lot of DIY with my cupcakes. It's up to you how involved you want to get with them. Depending on how you have them decorated, you may not need to create a fancy wrapper, etc. We had a great time coming up with the "style" of these cupcakes. The trial order and the samples of the giant cupcake I made were well received by my co-workers who got to reap the benefits of my efforts! They were hoping I needed to try a few more times. :)

Here is the link to my instructions for the mirrored tiers and the cupcake wrappers. I hope you choose this fun option of having wedding cupcakes to make your wedding reception stand out from the norm!
