Note: Some lines are in italic, but it doesn't show on YA. :/ sucks I didn?t think I hated creative writing until my teacher came up with the most ridiculous topic to write about ever. (ever is in italic) I pressed the tip of my pencil to the first line of the paper, pondering what I was about to write. I stared, again, at the whiteboard, where the topic was written in defined, red letters. Thirteen reasons for why I should learn a foreign language. (italic) Uh, alright. Here was the thing; I already knew a foreign language. It was German. Should I have just written down what the benefits of that were? I thought of asking Mrs. Crichton, but from the deadened silence that fell across the room, I chickened out. I hated public speaking. I could do it ?manage it well ?but I hated it, and had to avoid it when I could. Plus, I was the new kid. How awkward would that be? I guessed I could just answer the question and act like I didn?t speak a foreign language. That?s what she wanted from us anyway... I sighed, tapping my pencil against the uneven surface of the wooden desk. Would one reason to learn a foreign language be the attribute of being fluent and good at something else? No, that doesn?t mean anything. Ugh, this wasn?t as easy as it seemed. Well, if you knew a foreign language, then you traveled to a country that spoke that language, you?d be able to get through without getting yourself lost. No, too obvious and stupid. It was hard to think of it that way ?like I didn?t speak a foreign language already. Maybe if I thought about it the other way, it wouldn?t be as hard. What I liked about speaking German was the opportunities; a lot of doors were open for me. I could translate and understand other German-speakers. And having that in hand, I would have many other chances than others had. If I majored in German in college, then I could easily become a German professor? No, no, no, this wasn?t working. I had to focus. Ok, what I really liked about German was just...the German ?being able to speak it, understand other Germans, know something a lot of my peers didn?t. I liked being able to ramble on in German and know that no one but me knew what I was saying. Not many here spoke German, see. So would that count as a reason? Knowing something others didn?t? The minutes ticked off without hesitation. All around me pencils dashed across halfway filled papers, while mine remained empty. Great, I thought miserably. I had to think, concentrate. Focus, I urged myself. (focus: italic) ?What if we already speak a foreign language?? My heart leapt. Yes! Who asked that? I turned my head towards Jennifer Hoover, the asker of this great question. I never knew she spoke another language besides English. Mrs. Crichton looked up from the novel at her desk and pushed her glasses further up her nose. ?I suppose you could write what the benefits of that are. I?m guessing that?s easier?? Jennifer nodded. ?Yeah, a little. Thanks.? I sighed impatiently again. That didn?t help at all. And just writing about the advantages of speaking a foreign language wasn?t easier either. Think, think, think...(italic) Ok, um, foreign language...yeah. Come on, Andrea. Focus! (italic) Speaking a foreign language provides you with a more secure feeling about yourself ?like you feel smarter. You can do better than that. (italic) You can signup for a foreign language class you already know and ace it? Alright, you suck. (italic) Ugh, I can?t do this! ?You have ten more minutes,? Mrs. Crichton announced. ?Just letting you all know.? Crap. Come on, come on. My hand shook slightly, and my pencil tapped the desk in faster, fiercer thumps. When you speak a foreign language, you could play the part of a double-personality person ?like be American and French at the same time. ?Five more minutes!? I hated creative writing. Why did I ever signup for this class? Slowly, others began to stand and turn in their papers in a pile at Mrs. Crichton?s desk. I had only but my name and the date scrawled in the upper right corner of my paper. I was going to fail this, no doubt. There was no way I could come up with thirteen reasons and jot them down in detail in less than four minutes.
