Why Do Children Need To Play?

Learn Russian LanguageI recently read an article about parents having their preschool children tutored. These children were sat down and drilled the alphabet, spelling rules and other related "school" stuff. One reason for this recently developing trend could be due to a publication in Developmental Psychology which stated that, " ...providing environments that promote pre-literacy of achievement at older ages is the product of a sequential process of skill acquisition, then strengthening skills prior to school entry might lead children to master more advanced skills at an earlier age and perhaps even increase their ultimate level of achievement."

It is publications such as these that understandably confuse well-meaning parents. What they claim seems to make sense to adults. Basically, they are saying to take time to drill a young child in language skills because this will give them a head start in school. While I can agree that parents can do more to help enhance the education of their young children, I strongly disagree that tutoring, and drilling is the way to go.

Here is the reason that I believe in play as the best learning tool for a child:

Play enhances the growth of development because a young child is drawn to it. A young child is not naturally drawn to sitting down and "putting pencil to the paper". It is my opinion that teaching children using methods that they are not naturally drawn to can decrease desire for learning and may possibly be the cause of a child's early burn out.

In support of my belief, Zero to Three, a leading Organization of Early Childhood Development, states about learning to read:

"The first-and best-tip for sharing books with young children is to have fun together. If children are engaged and enjoying themselves, they are learning. When children have positive interactions with books, they are developing good feelings about reading, which will motivate them to continue seeking out books and other literacy materials as they grow."

Thankfully, the article that I'd read about tutoring preschoolers wasn't in favor of the "sit and drill" method. But it did state that despite the voices of experts and educators, parents will continue to believe that "beating" education into their child's brains is the way to go. This is due to fear and ignorance. Parents want their child to have an edge when they start school. Some parents are worried that their child will be the one who is "left behind". It's hard for them to believe the statements instead stating that young children learn best by playing in a thoughtfully prepared environment and interacting with nurturing teachers and caregivers.

On the other hand, I'm also a parent of three young children. I do remember wondering if I was doing enough for the education of my children at home. It was scary to trust in what I was taught. It seemed inadequate to believe that sitting a child on your lap and reading the same book again and again was helping to educate.

But, I did as I was taught, and so did my husband. Our reward, well I like to think that we taught our children more than to read or what a noun is or a verb. We instilled in them the joy of reading. Our children discovered that this reading business is fun. They discovered that getting lost in a book was a great way to escape temporarily into another world. They learned about the English language and it's many peculiarities as a result of reading, not drilling.

This "bonus" came after repeated listening to rich language from a good story. Mastery of spelling came later as well when my children decided they could attempt to write a story. We didn't force them to sit and write stories. This came as a natural unfolding of their development.

Some may argue that my children were just born bright, smart or gifted. Well, that may be true, but I do believe that without nurturing these talents and gifts in a method that went with rather than against their development that they, too, could succumb to weaknesses.

It is my opinion that parents from all walks of life can help to educate their young child by putting into practice what many times they've been told: to read to their young child and to allow their young child to play. A home filled with age appropriate toys, such as dolls, trucks, swings, balls and blocks will draw a child to explore and discover while building essential learning skills. The natural play will encourage and enhance the development of a young child. Listening to an age appropriate story while sitting in the lap of a nurturing individual will give the child an opportunity to learn language in a setting which is stimulating and comforting. A local librarian is a great professional to ask what books will be appropriate.

These methods can be affordable for most parents while hiring tutors or buying the many programs available to help teach young children may not be. Stick to what is simple and supported by Child Development experts. Do your research about how a young child learns best and believe that letting young children play will bring the goal you desire. To have a well-adjusted, educated child.
