Tips On Teaching English Language Learners (ELL)

Learn Hebrew LanguageThere are many tips on teaching English language learners that teachers should know. Classrooms are diverse, and many students will need help learning English. Luckily there are many tips for teaching ELL students that any teacher can follow. This article will provide you with detailed tips on teaching English language Learners.

Visual Aids

When teaching English language learners it is very helpful to use visual aids. Pictures and imagery will assist ELL students in learning by providing them with something visual to relate the words used to. Visual aids are also important when instructing ELL students so they have an idea of what they are going to do. Written instructions should always be included and written on the board where ELL students can see them. This tip will help ELL students visual what the teacher is saying.

Translators

Translators are another important tip for teaching ELL students, but it is important to not rely on a translator too much, or the student may never learn English. Translators should be used in the beginning and eventually weened out of the teaching scenario.

Group Work and Partners

A tip that is beneficial to all students is group work and partnering. When assigning an English language learner to a group or partner it will help both students. The ELL student will have a peer to help increase their ability to learn, and the other student will learn through teaching. Partnering ELL students is a good tip for teaching English language learners because it will provide them with someone on their level to learn from.

Repetition

Another important tip when teaching English language learners is repetition. Repetition of the same vocabulary will help an ELL student learn. Focusing on the same words will help the ELL student to

remember the English language through usage. Using the same words for the same ideas sticks with a routine and reinforces learning.

Patience

Signals

When teaching ELL students a good tip is to use signals. These non-verbal communication techniques will allow ELL students to communicate with the teacher without being embarrassed. Simple hand gestures such as making a fist or a putting a thumb up will alert the teacher that the English learner is having trouble and needs help. This tip will help when teaching ELL students because it provides a way for English language learners a way to contact a teacher without disrupting the class or drawing attention to themselves.

English language learners are common in many classrooms, and these tips will help you when teaching ELL students.
