Effective Studying Tips For College Freshmen

Studying Tips To an incoming freshman, college can have the same general appearance as high school. After all, college has classes, books, homework, papers, and tests. However, this is where the similarities end because higher education can be a definitively different educational experience. Unfortunately, many college freshmen are unable to succeed in college because they do not heed the warnings that are issued by staff and faculty. Studying can be a major factor in college success, which is why freshmen should follow certain tips if they want to do well in school.

Pace of life

The first concept for a freshman to grasp is that college is not only more advanced from an academic standpoint, but the pace is a lot quicker. This is something that first-year students must understand and respect. The challenge is that students may have survived in the past by cramming or trying to catch up in the last weeks of the quarter. Unfortunately, college can move at such a quick pace that students may find themselves hopelessly behind by the time they try to turn things around. There are many distractions in the college environment, which is why students must focus on their studies first and have fun later. Start early In order to adjust to the rigors of the college experience, students should start early and be diligent about their studies in the early weeks of the quarter. This isn't to say that students can't have any fun, but college freshman especially can get caught up in the fun of the college atmosphere. The first few weeks can be filled with sports, parties, clubs, and social gatherings. Again, a student may assume that they have time to hit the books, but this can become a major problem if freshmen get into the habit of studying late at night or not at all. Map it out

From a practical standpoint, one of the best decisions that a college freshman can make is to map out their term and decide when they are going to study and work on each assignment. This can be done on a calendar, spreadsheet, laptop, or smart device. Granted, this may be an unfamiliar activity for college freshmen that are used to living their academic life one day or week at a time. However, looking at the entire term and realizing what must be accomplished may help avoid last-minute moments of panic. The student still has to follow his or her own schedule, and there may be times when study sessions have to be rescheduled. However, planning ahead will help to prioritize the academic requirements of the term. Avoid distraction

The myth of the human existence is that people can effectively multitask. Unfortunately, some students will attempt to study, listen to music, watch television, and engage in social media all at the same time. This can cause studying to take much longer and be less effective in terms of data retention. Therefore, students must be willing to step away from their social space and study in a quieter place like the school library. Get help and ask questions

At some point in the studying process, students are going to get stuck because they do not understand some aspect of the material. For many college freshmen, the key to studying success is to set their pride aside and ask for help. Forms of help can include asking the teacher for extra help, finding a tutor, or joining a study group. Some information may be found on the Internet, but education is such that some content just needs to be explained by another individual. Therefore, dedicated studying is important but it is just one part of the process. Students that are confused need to raise their hand and ask questions. Otherwise, freshmen can quickly lose confidence and feel like they are never going to succeed in particular classes.
