Good Study Habits How Can I Get Better Grades

Developing Good Study Habits

good-study-habits: Good Study HabitsDuring my first semester of college, my study habits were poor or non-existent. This resulted in my flunking every subject except gym. My parents refused to pay my way through college. they said they would provide a place to live, food and clothing, but I must finance my college education. I worked as a bagger at a grocery store for nine months and put the money in the bank. Then I returned to college. This time I was determined to make good grades. I received my Associate of Science in Electrical Engineering two years later and found a job as a calibration technician. Then I attended school evenings while working days. I received my Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering 9 years later. This article covers what I learned about Good Study Habits while in college.

I like to study in a quiet environment. There is nothing wrong with having music playing while you study as long as the music doesn't become a distraction. Create an environment where you can focus on your studies and not be interrupted often. Make yourself comfortable.

At home, my brothers and I slept in the attic. There were two bedrooms and the open attic. We had an old kitchen table and four folding chairs in the open attic. That provided a location for me to study. My brother loved the Beatles. Every night he would play Beatle music while I studied. Since I loved many of the Beatle songs, it could easily have become a distraction for me. But I didn't allow it to distract my focus on my studies. Because I had two brothers in the attic, I learned to mentally block out all outside distractions while studying.

Tenacity plays a large role in effective study habits. The single minded determination to learn a topic or complete a homework assignment is very important. If you allow distractions and put everything else ahead of your studies, you will not attain good grades. College education provides you with the knowledge to get a job. Once you have the job, you are expected to apply that knowledge. Learning and applying are two very different worlds. But if you fail to learn, surviving on the job will be very difficult.

Each day, when I got home, I would eat a meal and then retreat to the attic to do my homework and study. Any recreation would come after I had completed my homework and studies. I started my homework and studies at the same time each night. Some nights, there was lot of studying to do for a test and I would be studying from early evening to the early morning hours.

Setting up a time for studying is important. Forming the habit of starting your studies at a certain time each night goes a long ways toward completing homework assignments on time and being prepared for tests and quizzes. Pay attention to the homework you are given each night. The homework provides the knowledge needed to pass an upcoming test or quiz.

Improving your reading comprehension and taking good notes in class are also important. It can be very frustrating to study for a quiz on a topic not covered in your text book and then learn that your class notes will not suffice. I developed a form of shorthand for taking notes that may help you.

When writing a sentence in your notes, skip all vowels except where one is needed to figure out the word. The resulting sentence will be a little cryptic but readable. It also takes less time to write. The less time you spend writing, the more time you can spend paying attention to the teacher.

Learning how to read fast is also a great help. Pick up a book on speed reading from your local library. It will provide you with the tools to read faster, saving valuable time when studying.

A book about improving reading comprehension is invaluable not only for school but also for on the job.

If you are fortunate enough to have purchased the book prior to the start of the course, put your time to good use by reading as much of the book as possible. Highlight the important sentences and paragraphs so that you could find it easily when it is needed. This will ensure that you are ready for the course and may also cut the study time needed during the course allowing more time for other subjects.

I hope these tips help you maintain a good grade average in school.
