President's Day Activities For Kids

Children Study HabitsI think President's Day is a good day for parents to teach a little civics and patriotism to their children. President's Day weekend should be about fun and learning. for kids of a really young age you don't want to demand that they learn the entire Bill of Rights or even any of the other amendments to the Constitution just yet. Maybe tell them a few cool stories about George Washington, John Kennedy or "The Great Communicator" Ronald Reagan just to see if they have a natural interest in American history. Some good texts I would recommend for any parent with young children on these subjects would be David McCullough's "1776" to teach them interesting stories about the American Revolution and some of the history surrounding it. Although much of the vocabulary is either too dated or advanced for most youngsters as noted by Amazon.com you can read to your kids and teach them about some of the young folks who fought for freedom in this very worthy cause.

Bill Bennett's history books are quite a good read for the most part for young Americans. Bennett is the former Secretary of Education and is widely listened to radio talk show host. I would recommend the book "The Children's Book of America." by Bennett which is now available at a price of just over sixteen dollars which makes it quite affordable as noted by Amazon.

For older kids say in the middle school range I would begin to quiz them about the three branches of government if that is what they are interested in. Just give them basic questions on our government that cannot be skewed for partisan manipulation, like for example who is the Secretary of State? You don't want to influence political persuasions, let them make up their own mind. Make sure your kids bring home that Civics book and actually study it with him. You don't need a manual on how to read and have a nuanced discussion with your kid to make sure they have good study habits. Make sure those books come home and don't just sit in a locker.

If reading is simply not their thing or something they are not good at or shy about maybe you could encourage them to learn a patriotic song or paint pictures depicting how much their freedom means to them. As far as materials for this project go you can buy paint and a canvas at Sherwin Williams for a rather expensive price, but no price should be too big when you're encouraging a young person's creativity. Sherwin Williams is of course just one place you can look for a canvas as noted by Sherwin Williams.

When your kids are old enough teach them how to hang a flag properly. This is an activity that can be done on any day and of course is not just reserved for Flag Day.
