Common Blogging Mistakes Typically Made By New Bloggers

Frequent mistakes in blogging can lead to frustration as the lack of traffic, interaction and promotion rides on each step you take toward building your blog. With such stiff competition in the blogging world, simple mistakes can be the death knell of your blogging effort; to avoid these mistakes, use the following tips to guarantee your success online:

1. Not choosing a blog niche

Most new bloggers jump into blogging by talking about everything under the sun - it's okay, most of us bloggers have done this because it's so exciting to begin writing online. However, not choosing a specific niche to talk about on your blog will cause your writing to be wild and unfocused. It's better to stick to a core set of topics so that your blog will rank high within a specific niche.

2. One post topic at a time

When writing a blog post, it's important to talk about one topic at a time. Being all over the place will confuse your reader and cause your search engine rankings to dip for this new post because there isn't a clear set of keywords as they are often spread out amongst various subjects.

3. Sporadic posting schedule

Although it's not required that you blog every day, it is beneficial to keep a blog post schedule. Determined by your time and effort, try to keep a consistent schedule for your writing - this helps your readers know when a new post will be coming out which keeps them coming back time and time again.

4. Not using the right blogging platform

Your blogging platform plays a very important role in the success of your blog. Using free blogging platforms will hold you over well for a while but in order to gain the full freedom and flexibility while blogging you should definitely consider moving to a more robust blogging platform such as Wordpress.

5. Creating text heavy content

Most blog posts are done through text (with the exception of podcasting and video blogging). Because readers only have a finite amount of time each day it's important that you give your readers content they can skim - this means use headings, bold and italics to make the important information stand out so your reader can zip through, get the most out of your information and be on their way.

6. Not including additional media

A picture, video or audio can often be the extra "oompf" that helps create a great blog post. To begin, choose a great image for each blog post which captures the imagination and interest of the reader. Add in additional media such as video or audio to improve the information in each post without forcing the reader to go through long-winded text.

7. Writing lackluster headlines

The headline is very much like an advertisement: it says "ooh, click me and read more!" One of the most frequent mistakes when blogging is to skip out of taking the time to write a great headline. Don't let a great post go to waste by using a boring title, include a little flare and tease visitors into reading the rest of the post.

8. Not giving a call-to-action

After your reader has completed your post what do you want them to do? It's simple: share your content, read an additional post or leave a comment. Share additional information and create a call-to-action so readers know exactly what to do once they've completed the post they've just read.

9. Not using your own domain name

Just like using free blogging platforms, it's vital that your blog has its own domain name. Your domain name is your online branding which helps your blog stand out from the rest. This name could be your own, the topic you blog about or something zany - just make it memorable.

10. Creating killer content

Finally, the most important aspect of your blog should be the content you deliver. Create each post with as much great information as you can, back it up with resources and be sure to tell about something which hasn't been told time and time again. A great post goes a long way on the web; take the extra time to create something great and all of your blogging efforts will be a success.
