Top Ten Most Important Electric Guitars Of All Time

Yamaha Guitars10. Paul McCartney's Hofner 500/1 Bass. This bass was given to Paul as a gift from Selmer, the English distributors for Hofner, during the height of Beatlemania. McCartney also used an earlier version of the 500/1 on the early Beatles recording sessions. Violin-like in appearance, this lightweight, hollow-bodied bass has a short-scale 30-inch length. This bass was used in studio and on the worldwide tours of the Beatles. It can be seen on film in A Hard Day's Night, Help! and on the Ed Sullivan Show appearances. Still taped onto the bass is the original set list from the 1965 Beatles performance at the now defunct Shea Stadium.9. Jack Bruce's Gibson EB-O Bass. This SG-guitar shaped bass was originally owned by Felix Pappalardi of Mountain. After seeing Mountain live and expressing his like for the sound of the band and especially the deep bass sound Felix got out of this bass, Felix gave this bass to Jack as a gift after inscribing To Jack, XXX, Felix on the body. The 2 worked together on Disraeli Gears by Cream and on Jack's first solo album Songs for the Tailor.8. Eric Clapton's Red Gibson Les Paul. At first glance this guitar appears unimpressive but consider the fact that this guitar was used by Clapton on the legendary weeping, wailing, crying guitar solo for the Beatles song While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Shortly after the 1968 recording sessions for the White Album were complete Clapton gave the guitar to George Harrison.7. Johnny Ramone's White Mosrite Ventures II. This guitar was was made in the 60's and the legendary Ramones guitarist purchased it in 1978. Johnny removed the original tremelo or whammy bar in favor of a straight bridge. After one of the pickups died Johnny had a Dimarzio Fat Strat pickup put in to replace it. To accomodate his super low guitar strap height Johnny duct taped two guitar straps together. Hey Ho, Let's Go!6. Jimi Hendrix's Black 1968-69 Gibson Flying V. Jimi custom ordered this guitar later in his career. Hendrix requested gold-plated hardware and split-diamond fingerboard inlays. Jimi is credited with rediscovering and popularizing the futuristic Flying-V guitar. Along with the Gibson Explorer both guitars were considered commercial failures when they were originally produced in 1958. Jimi used this guitar in his later live performances, primarily on Red House. This guitar can be seen being played by Hendrix in the concert film Isle Of Wight from 1970, just 2 weeks before Hendrix passed.5. Billy Gibbon's Muddywood guitar. This uniquely designed guitar is a piece of American Blues music history. After learning that the Mississippi plantation dwelling that the Blues Legend Muddy Waters grew up in was about to be torn down, the ZZ Top guitarist came up with a great idea! After taking a roof beam from the cabin the creative guitarist decided to make a guitar out of it. Billy claims that the guitar sounded great and he had a special snake-like graphic painted on it. The long, thin shape of the graphic was designed to resemble the winding, meandering shape of the Mississippi river. After a world tour of the Hard Rock Cafes in the late eighties the guitar was donated by ZZ Top to The Delta Blues Museum for permanent display.4. Brian Jones' 1964 White Vox Mark VI guitar. The teardrop shaped guitar is instantly recognizable because of the Rolling Stones performances on the Ed Sullivan, Shindig! and Hullabaloo TV shows. The 2 pickup model features a metal pickguard and detachable back pads. Brian Jones' Vox guitar has been on permanent display at the Hard Rock Cafe in N.Y.C. since 1984.3. David Gilmour's 1968-69 Black Fender Stratocaster. Originally purchased in 1970, this endlessly modified and customized Strat can be heard on Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall. Most notably on the song Comfortably Numb. Dave purchased the guitar with a rosewood neck but had a custom made maple neck to replace it. A small toggle switch was installed to allow for further bridge pickup combinations and a Seymour Duncan bridge pickup was installed to replace a Dimarzio replacement pickup.2. John Lennon's Black Rickenbacker 325. This guitar was given to Lennon by Rickenbacker in 1964. Lennon played this guitar on the second Ed Sullivan appearance, in studio on Cant Buy Me Love and at the legendary 1965 Shea Stadium Beatles concert.1. Les Pauls' Log guitar. This primitive looking guitar was built by Les in 1941. The middle or log section contains all the guitars working parts and the neck is attached to this section. The 2 Epiphone sides are detachable and the guitar is held together by a piece of plywood that is attached to the back of the guitar. Les rarely brought this guitar out on the road but he did record all of all his hit records with this guitar from 1941 to 1949. Les also used this guitar on several of Bing Crosby's records. This 20 pound guitar must sound great with it's old electric clock electronics. This guitar can be considered a prototype for the legendary Les Paul Gibson guitar line.Sources: Guitar Player and Guitar World Magazine.By Joseph Militello - I love music, I enjoy reviewing and listening to new music CDs, if you are interested in submitting a CD, please send me a message.
