Guitar Starter Packages For Under $300

Washburn GuitarsJust because it's going to be a slim Christmas due to the economy doesn't mean you can't get your child that guitar he's been asking for. There are a number of affordable guitar packages for under $300 that will give you a choice between an electric guitar and an acoustic guitar. These packages come with all the necessary accessories to get your kid started on his new adventure as a musician.

If you like your peace and quiet, go with an acoustic guitar package. These packages can be as little as $100.00. they typically include accessories such as a tuner, extra strings, a guitar strap and a soft case for the instrument. Quality on these lower end packages is inconsistent. Some of the guitars will withstand the abuse of a child more than others, but know that all of them include fairly inexpensive components, so tuning keys will likely wear out fast. This is important because kids love to turn them. they probably won't stay in tune well, and the strings will be poor quality. Depending on your goal as a parent, a low end guitar package is perfect for a child who just wants to pretend. However, if you know you've got a maestro in your household, jump up to a better quality investment. Hands down, most music retailing experts recommend Yamaha guitars as the best novice/student guitar. The quality is very good, they're easy on the fingers, and this is important. Learning to play an acoustic guitar hurts the tips of the fingers. If it hurts too much, the child will give up. If the guitar doesn't have a nice sound, the child will lose interest, so know that beginner Yamahas sound good. This better quality package can be found for $160.00 to $170.00. It will have to be purchased from a musical instrument retailer. Discount mass retailers, like Walmart or Target, will carry the lower end packages.

If you're a brave and rocking kind of parent, electric guitar packages are available for about the same price from the same retailers and music outlets. The accessories included in this kind of guitar package include a small amplifier, guitar picks, a strap and a soft case. You'll have to purchase an electronic tuner separately. Like the acoustic guitar packages, some are better quality than others. As a rule, packages purchased in a music store should be a better value for your money simply because people who shop there are more serious about their music education. For $200.00, your kid can have incredible "cred" with a package that includes the king of electric guitars - the Fender Strat. This package is available at http://www.musiciansfriend.com. It does come with a tuner.

Whether music becomes a life mission for your child, or it's just a youthful phase, these guitar packages are worth the money. Maybe you want to start with the acoustic guitar and advance your child to the electric guitar as a reward for practicing. Some of these packages include instructional DVDs. As a final word of advice, get to know the local music store or Musicians Friend, because most of the accessories are things that have to be replaced occasionally. Ultimately, enjoy the joy you've given your child.
