Simon Lee Guitars: Made From Recycled Materials

Jumbo GuitarsDid you know music can be environmentally friendly? It may be hard to pictures sounds being green, but the instruments that make them are getting greener. You may have heard of a hand me down guitar, and don't get me wrong, these are excellent ways to waste less, but not what I had in mind. London based, Simon Lee Guitars are making guitars and basses using environmentally friendly materials, in particular the Cyclotron series. These guitars are beautiful, colorful, and even customizable.

Traditional guitar making uses many different types of hardwoods, that are becoming rare in nature, and are often taken from rainforest's, or harvested from trees that are becoming rare in nature. The practice is not very sustainable, and although the exotic woods may stand the test of time, other materials are just as good, other materials you may not think can be turned into a guitar. Simon Lee of Simon Lee Guitars realized this and made it a point to design beautiful guitars out of materials that would not damage the fragile balance of the tropical ecosystems.

The bodies of the guitars and basses are made from recycled plastics. Because of this, you get a pattern of colors and designs that is unmatched. Once model even looks like high quality marble. The sound is not comprised either in these modern designs. The core of the guitar is made with sustainable maple, which he chose for its strength and ability to produce crisp clear tones. The outside of the "sandwich" design can be made out of different types of plastic. You can choose from ground up coffee cups, offcuts from industrial pipes, reclaimed plastic from the food production industry, crushed Cd's, plastic bottles and more. Just pick your model, and your material, and your Simon Lee guitar will be hand made. He even offers full or partial customization.

With all the smashing, and breaking of guitars out there in the world of Rock and Roll, it's great to see someone putting the plastic pieces together for a change. With his forward thinking we can all learn a thing or two about what it means to think green. Any object can be made differently. We can improve on everything out there, by thinking of ways to make the fundamental core of objects better. Simon Lee guitars are a great example of thinking outside the box, and the power of creativity.
