Difference Between Electric And Acoustic Guitar

Giannini StringsGuitar is a musical instrument with ancient roots and is recognized as one of the primary instruments in jazz, country, blues and many forms of pop music.

Basically there are many types of guitars depending upon number of strings and sound they produce. But in this article without going in much depth, I will stick only to the difference between acoustic and electric - the main and common types of guitars.

HOW IT WORKS / APPLICATION :-

Body and shape of acoustic guitar plays a great role in sound coming out. When the strings are plucked or struck, they resonate and vibrate the air inside the body cavity. The hollow body of acoustic guitar vibrates with the sounds of string and hence amplifies the notes played. On the other side an electric guitar needs an external amplifier to amplify the sound of notes played. So even a lighter touch to the strings produce a good sound and hence are easier to play.

SHAPE & BODY :-

As acoustic guitar amplifies the sound within the body, they are larger then electric ones and have a limited choice when it comes to space and size. On the other side, size doesn't matter for electric guitar as most of the work of projecting sound is done by an external amplifier.

Small body and thick neck along with light gauge strings makes up an electric guitar's body. Acoustic guitars have a thicker neck to support tension of heavy strings. In looks and design, electric guitar definitely tops the list. So if you want it to look cool hanging around your neck, electric guitars are the one to go with.

GUITAR STRINGS :-

Definitely strings play a great role in acoustic guitars as they are starting point of vibrations generated inside the body. Basically their string comes in two materials, nylon and steel. They both produce different type of sounds too. Nylon string produces a more tranquil sound so are better for classical and folk type music style. Steel strings are louder and thus are good for playing rock, country and for a type that needs a louder and crisp sound.

Although a common guitar contains six strings but some guitar contains twelve strings too. No doubt that sound of a twelve string guitar is much much better than a six string guitar. It sounds like playing two six string guitars simultaneously. But at the same time they are harder to learn and can be very frustrating for a naive. For a new bee, six string guitars are better to start with.

Another class of guitar, called blended guitar, combines some options of acoustic and electric guitars. While body is similar to that of acoustic, neck looks more like that of a electric one. Notes can be played both with and without the amplifier. But obviously, sound will be better when used with an amplifier.

Finally for a new bee, a question comes, which one is easier to start learning with. Definitely electric guitars are easier to learn as even a light touch to strings produces a good sound. On an acoustic guitar, strings should be struck with good force to produce a better sound. Although electric ones are easier to learn but they have some downsides attached too. There are obviously limited types of music that you can play with it.

So, if you learn with an acoustic one, you might find yourself a better musician in the long run. And also electric guitars are more expensive as an amplifier adds up to the final cost. So budget may also be a deciding factor.
