I would like to share a little advice to help you best achieve your business goals.
I have been in the design business for quite some time now and have seen various approaches, both from business owners and my "associates" in the design business.
Some of them good, many of them bad!
Although I can not outline here exactly what you should do for your particular business (due to differences of the nature of business, targeted market, etc.), I am going to try to help you avoid many of the traditional pitfalls.
First, and most importantly:
When having artwork created for your business, whether it be a logo, business cards, etc., make sure that you own ALL rights to the image (copyright, and otherwise).
I have seen many companies, usually start-ups, hire a graphic designer to create a logo for them say for business cards.
The company starts to grow and it is time to have that logo design placed on your letterhead, business envelopes, perhaps even your web page, store front sign, and so on.
This is a bad time to realize that, although the logo was created expressly for you, the "designer" maintains all copyrights to the image. Any subsequent use for objects other than the initial rendering will cost you substantially, as many designers will charge you to release your logo for each additional use. This tactic is often used to ensure your return business...... at a nominal fee, of course.
Many "designers" may also prevent you from using the logo for services outside of their business practices (Business sign or vehicle graphics?), without a cut........because they own the design.
PLEASE, do not sign any contracts for work, unless you are sure of the outcome. Don't be afraid to ask!
Yes, you may save a hundred or so dollars on the design, but in the long run, you will be paying dearly!
Secondly:
Find out where any graphics contained in your logo came from!
A recent client of mine, unhappy with work performed by a local designer, came in to have a logo created for his business. After presenting him with several logo ideas, he showed me the "logos" which were previously created. Several of the designs were taken directly off of the internet, from another company's logo! Who will be legally responsible for copyright infringement? Yes you!
Bottom line: If you are paying to have original art created, make sure that that is exactly what you are receiving.....original art!
