Storing Funeral Mementos With A Funeral Memory Box

funeral-flowers: Funeral FlowerThe very idea of organizing photographs and mementos from a funeral service into a scrapbook borders on the edge of macabre. However, there is absolutely no arguing that the surviving family needs some way of organizing pictures taken during the service (along with newspaper clippings, obituaries, funeral programs, sympathy cards, etc.) into a notebook, box, or some other storage system.

What my sis and I did after our parents' death was to assemble a memory box to store those photographs and other ephemera. The memory box was large enough to hold newspaper clippings and obituaries without creasing them, plus numerous stacks of sympathy cards and letters, assorted florists cards, funeral guest books, programs, and even a 5 x 7 binder filled with photographs taking during the funeral service. The box is kept in the front room, where we can continue to place cards and other small items inside as we receive them.

Creating a funeral memory box for yourself or even someone else who has recently experienced the loss of a loved one, is not that difficult at all. Here are three ideas that may work for you:

Decoupage a box : While putting things in an acid free, archival box is nice, the purpose of funeral memory box is to not preserve funeral ephemera and sympathy cards for someone's great, great grand kids. This box is meant to be opened and looked through, which is why any type of box will work for creating a funeral memory box.

Sis and I used a simple square box with a hinged lid which was easy to store and easy to cover with paper. The box was covered in sympathy gift wrap, which was cut into 3" x 3" squares and decoupaged on both the inside and outside of the box itself.

If gift wrap is too boring, trying decoupaging pictures torn from magazines, such as flower gardens, sailboats, ocean scenes, or some other peaceful pattern. As a final step, decoupage a waterproof copy of a favorite photograph of the deceased on the outside of the box.

Clear coat a plain pine doll's chest: The Craft Warehouse is just one example of a craft store that carries small, doll sized treasure chests that measure around 12"w x 8"d x 12"h, the perfect size for storing ephemera. These chests are usually made of unfinished pine and quite affordable. Covering this simple chest with a clear coat of acrylic or a shiny coast is all it takes to make this a wonderful box for storing those funeral mementos.

Restore an antique suitcase or Gladstone bag: If you like the look of vintage, antique suitcases, vintage briefcases or even a Gladstone bag are all a wonderful containers for storing keepsake items. Flat, mid sized luggage is best since it will store easily beneath a sofa or bed, or on a shelf in the closet.
