Valentine's Day: Wearing Your Heart On Your Sleeve

Back in the Middle Ages, the single young people drew names to find out who their valentines were. they pinned the paper hearts on their sleeves and wore them for a week. Valentine's Day is how the term "wearing your heart on your sleeve" came to be. It means you show your emotions openly, especially when it comes to your true love.

Americans Aren't the Only Romantics Around the Globe

Valentine's Day is celebrated in America, Japan, Britain, Australia, Austria, Germany, Denmark and Korea. Valentine's Day is also celebrated in Scotland, Taiwan, Canada, Mexico, France and Italy. In fact, the Italian city of Verona, home to Shakespeare's "Romeo" and "Juliet", receives letters addressed to "Juliet" every Valentine's Day. The letters are judged, and a prize is awarded to the best one.

Roses Are Red...

Next to Mother's Day, the largest amount of roses are sent on Valentine's Day. More than 50 million roses are sent, in fact. Most of the flowers are red since red roses mean "I love you", the most popular phrase on Valentine's Day.

Why Give Chocolates on Valentine's Day?

Another fun fact about Valentine's Day is, giving chocolates has been a tradition for centuries. Chocolate was considered to be a cure for the broken-hearted. It's also been considered to be an aphrodisiac. Cassanova, who is known as "The World's Greatest Lover", ate chocolate to make him virile. It's probably no surprise that Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine's Day in the late 1800's.

Finding Your Future Husband

According to a legend from the Middle Ages, the first single, unrelated man a girl sees on Valentine's Day will become her husband. If a girl sees a bird on that day, the type of bird will predict what kind of a man she will marry. If she sees a goldfinch on Valentine's Day, she'll will marry a rich man; but if she sees a sparrow, she'll marry a poor man. A blackbird means her husband will be a clergyman; a bluebird means he'll be a happy man; and seeing doves on Valentine's Day means she'll have wedded bliss. If a girl spots an owl, she'll never marry. And if she sees a squirrel on Valentine's Day, her husband will be a stingy man who doesn't give her any money.

How Many Children Will I Have?

Another fun fact about Valentine's Day is yet another legend. To find out how many children a girl will have, she should cut an apple in half. However many seeds are inside is the number of children she will have.
