Avoiding Air Pollutants In Your Home

safe-dehumidifier: Safe DehumidifierMany researchers are saying that this year is going to be one of the worse allergy seasons. Many allergy suffers will tell you that they believe that this may be true since they have all ready been suffering for months. For this reason, most of us will want our homes to be a safe haven away from all air pollutants. However, many of our homes are just as bad as the outdoors. For this reason, we need to learn the causes of home air pollutants and how to avoid them.

One of the worse air pollutants in our homes is dust. Dust contains many chemicals including the toxic chemical formaldehyde. Dust can be found anywhere. However, it loves to hide in carpets, furniture, and on top of our cabinets. We can remove it with regular vacuuming and dusting. When you are vacuuming make sure vacuum cleaner has a HEPA filter that will help reduce the amount of dust that will emit back into the room. When you are dusting, use a paper face mask to keep from breathing in the dust.

Another air common air pollutant found in most home is smoke. This can be found from fireplaces and from cooking. A great way to help cut down on your cooking smoke is to use the microwave whenever possible and to cook outside on the grill when possible. Of course, you should also never allow anyone to smoke cigarettes, pipes, etc, in your home if an allergy sufferer lives there.

Scented cleaners and candles can release air borne pollutants. Many people love the scents from candles. However, some of the basic candles will also release chemicals that can bring on allergy attacks. If you like the smell of candles, you might want to try using soy type candles and see if they irritate your allergies. As for cleaners, you can't do away with these all together. However, you could try using more natural cleaners or making your own out of vinegar and baking soda and see if this helps. Plus, you should always make sure you never use any cleaners in an area that is not well ventilated.

Be careful of the type of paint you use in your homes. Most standard paints contain a gas known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds). These gases can irritate and cause some allergy type symptoms in some people. If you plan on painting the interior of your home, look for paint that states that it contains no VOC's.

Look for mold in your home. Mold can easily begin to grow if you have leaks in your home. For this reason, promptly fix any water leaks as soon as you are aware of them. You should also be aware of the humidity level of your home. Try to keep it as 30 to 50 percent. If you have a basement or attic, be aware of any standing water in both of these areas. If you find that you have a problem with standing water consider using a dehumidifier.

You want to keep your home as pure from air pollutants as you can. This is the only it can actually be your safe haven.
