How to Become an iPhone Apps Developer

By Jason Spidle, eHow Contributor How to Become an iPhone Apps Developer thumbnail

The iPhone App store has quickly become a multimillion-dollar industry for software developers and Apple. According to Keith Stuart of The Guardian, the rising revenues of the iPhone App Store make it one of the best venues through which to make money from software. The App Store's success has largely stemmed from the low barrier to entry for iPhone Apps developers. The path to becoming an iPhone Apps Developer will include some work, however, and you must undertake a number of key steps before releasing your software. Things You'll Need

  • Mac operating system
  • Software Development Kit (SDK) for iPhone

Instructions

Brainstorm and Vet Your App Idea

  • 1. Develop an idea for an iPhone app that will provide iPhone users with a program that performs a desirable function. According to Keith Stuart of The Guardian, iPhone apps need to provide users with a richly interactive experience no matter what type of app you develop.

  • 2. Research existing apps that may already serve the niche you are considering. Your app must provide substantial improvement over existing apps to justify development. Jen Gordon of Smashing Magazine reports that many of the best iPhone apps are simply improvements over existing apps.

  • 3. Research to determine the feasibility of the App Store's accepting your app.The Apple iPhone App Store guidelines provide a full review of Apple's expectations for submitted apps (see Resources section).

  • 4. Outline a game plan for app development. The road to App Store approval may lack specific barriers, but it will require a small investment of money and a large investment of time.

  • 5. Code the iPhone app. If you are comfortable learning how to use the Xcode development environment and code with the Objective C programming language, turn to resources available from Apple and on the Internet for guidance. Otherwise, hire an iPhone app developer on whom you can lean for the technical aspects of app development.

Join the Developers Network

  • 6. Launch a Web browser, and navigate to the "iOS Developer Program" page (see Resources section).

  • 7. Click "Enroll Now." To join the Apple Developer Network, you must pay a $99 annual fee for membership.

  • 8. Click "Continue" and log in to an existing developer account or create a new account. If you are creating a new account, you must register a new Apple Developer account as an individual or a business, depending on your circumstances.

  • 9. Select the "iOS Developer Program" as the program type. Click "Continue."

  • 10. Review your enrollment information. Click "Submit."

  • 11

Review the Apple Developer Program license agreement. Click "Accept."

  • 12

Enter your payment information and then click "Submit" to finalize your registration with the Apple Development Program as an iOS developer.

  • 13

Navigate to the "iOS Dev Center" (see Resources section) once your Apple Developer Program account is active, and download the "iOS SDK." (Developing your iPhone app requires these packages.) At this stage, you are now ready to begin coding your iPhone app idea.

Design, Program and Submit Your App

  • 14

Review the "iOS Reference Library" (see Resources secrtion) for guidance from Apple on how to design your app to meet its App Store guidelines and how to program in the Xcode environment, and for a basic primer on Objective C.

  • 15

Initiate coding and design work on your app. If working with a freelance developer, begin communicating your expectations and setting your objectives for design.

  • 16

Test the app continually throughout the development page using the Xcode iPhone simulation interface to ensure that the code meets your expectations. Fine-tune the program if you run into any problems.

  • 17

Submit your app once you have completed coding and development (see Resources section). Manage your approved app from the App Store Resource Center or through iTunes.
